Volleyball Alberta and Volleyball Canada are testing (piloting) the Libero position at the U15 level to see if introducing it earlier helps athletes develop skills, improves the quality of play, and better prepares players for long-term volleyball pathways.
This is a trial only, and feedback and stats will help decide whether the Libero becomes a permanent option in the future.
Teams may choose to use a Libero (it is optional, not required).
If used:
Only 1 Libero is allowed.
Teams will have 6 total substitutions.
Teams may be asked to share game statistics and feedback to help evaluate the pilot.
No Libero will be used.
Teams will have 12 substitutions.
This matches the format used at Nationals, so athletes are prepared for that level of play.
To see if learning the Libero role earlier:
Supports skill development
Improves game flow and quality
Better aligns with long-term athlete development
Feedback and data (stats, surveys) from this season will be reviewed.
A future recommendation about future Libero use will be shared by summer 2026.
